Funding California’s Prop. 8 is not the first time the Mormons went beyond their borders to promote hate and intolerance of gays and lesbians - it's been happening for years. The Mormon Church regularly intervenes around the country to promote hatred, bigotry and discrimination against gay and lesbian Americans. They have a long and shameful history of trying to forcefully impose their will on others.
In 1998, the Mormon Church directly contributed $1.1 million to ban same-sex marriages in Alaska and Hawaii. Of the $600,000 anti-gay bigots had in hand to try to ban gay marriage in Alaska in October 1998, $500,000 came from one big lump sum donation from the Mormon Church. That's 83% of the entire hateful campaign financed by the Mormon Church.
The ABC news affiliate in Salt Lake recently reported that a new internal LDS Church document has surfaced, one showing the Church's involvement and strategy GOING BACK MORE THAN A DECADE. The memo was reportedly sent from a LDS General Authority to a member of the “Quorum of the Twelve.” It deals with the issue of same-sex marriage and IT IS DATED, MARCH 4, 1997. The eleven-year-old memo gives a glimpse into then-President Gordon B. Hinckley's strategy for dealing with same-sex marriage. It talks of a meeting with President Hinckley who reportedly said to "move ahead" with the church's opposition to same-sex marriage. This memo also discusses joining forces with the Catholic Church, saying: "...the public image of the Catholic Church is higher than our Church. In other words, if we get into this, they are the ones with which to join."
Andrew Sullivan, conservative gay journalist: “I have never done anything - nor would I do anything - to impede or restrict the civil rights of Mormons. I respect their right to freedom of conscience and religion. In fact, it is one of my strongest convictions. But when they use their money and power to target my family, to break it up, to demean it and marginalize it, to strip me and my husband of our civil rights, then they have started a war. And I am not a pacifist.”
“The Mormons are particularly vicious homophobes. Gay people are rendered invisible, their personhood erased in this church. The cruelty the Mormon Church inflicts on its gay members is matched only by the Mormons' centuries-long demonization and hatred of black people. That African-Americans would seek common cause with a church that only recently still believed they were the product of Satan shows how profound homophobia can be. But this shared hatred can be exploited by the Hugh Hewitts and Mitt Romneys of this world. And what we have just witnessed is a trial run for much larger ambitions. If we don't resist this now, we will not be able to resist it later.” |
